He travelled all over the United States, but the stories and impressions he left with his boys were of those red sandstone cliffs, white cumulous thunderheads, amd little two-bit cozy courts eking out an existence in the depression.During the years that his boys were growing up, living with their parents in Glendale, California, their father often had the occasion to tell them stories as he was driving a 1948 DeSoto or a 1953 Pontiac- of his own life as a child growing up in Southern California during the years of World Way I, then as a young man traveling the deserts next to the Santa Fe Railroad mainline in a Model T- then as a young married man working full time for a major oil company as the Depression progressed.

His life experiences include solitude, pain, and death as he experienced what happened to himself and others. The reader is asked to put themselves into a diminutive community theater environment and imagine that a story teller is present on a small stage with minimal props to support the stories- and with the main character changing his age and demeanour as the stories progress. It is definitely a one person show/book, with the reader/audience required to use their imagination throughout the performance/reading. The reader is also encouraged to recall the stories that were part of their growing up and how they painted a picture of their own parents experiences. This selection of written vignettes is based on those stories and upon a collection of black and white photographs, black and white sill shots, that were found in an old leather suitcase after he passed away.

These vignettes were sometimes repeated to the boys and, in some cases, when they were obviously still sensitive and of great importance to him, only spoken of once. In all caseds, they are replcated as fiction with the structure of the man telling the stories being a genuine character, and the general location and scenes being authentic.
