Most recently he was Professor & Director of the Wellcome Trust/Wolfson Clinical Research Facility at Queen’s University Belfast, and he previously worked at the University of Glasgow and UT Southwestern in Dallas, Texas.His main interests are the design, conduct and communication of clinical research and he delivers workshops on these topics in a range of university and NHS departments throughout the UK.

He is especially interested in the history of clinical research and research ethics and is regularly invited to speak on these subjects.He is the author or editor of more than 20 books including Trial by Fire: Lessons from the History of Clinical Trials and On Moral Grounds: Lessons from the History of Research Ethics.
